Single goal sinks Ireland hopes
Devonshire Cougars 1
Ireland Rangers 0
A last-gasp strike by Devonshire Cougars' Moses Steede broke Ireland Rangers hearts and sent them crashing out at the first hurdle of the Friendship Trophy in a bad-tempered game at BAA yesterday.
The cup tie was anything but friendly in nature, with Cougars substitute Koi-von Tucker being sent off for a second yellow card after the final whistle for arguing.
Cougars coach Shaun Smith said: "It was a typical cup game - we didn't dominate the game, but I thought we were the better side.
"We were fortunate to get a goal in the end, but hopefully that should give us a little bit of momentum going back into the league."
The game came to life after the break when Rangers midfielder Yusaff Pitt smacked the bar with a fierce free-kick and substitute Nathan Darrell fired just wide of the target.
But, with the clock ticking down, it was the Devonshire side who made the most of their chances as Steede latched onto a loose ball and slotted it coolly past the despairing dive of Ricardo Tucker in the Rangers goal to go through to the next round.
