Minister Butler to talk on homeless issues on radio
Initiatives to address the challenges of homelessness in Bermuda will air today on a radio talk show.
The Minister of Culture and Social Rehabilitation, Dale Butler, will appear on The Everest DeCosta Talk Show this afternoon.
He will also discuss progress toward programming for the North Street Shelter and the establishment of Homeless Advisory Council.
Minister Butler said that the numbers of homeless people in Bermuda usually drift in and out between 250 and 350 over the past three years.
He said: "It is our aim to keep the country updated on the progress of our initiatives on the homeless issues."
In July the Minister reached out to the community and asked for volunteers to join the Homeless Advisory Council: "So far there have been 50 that have requested an interest in serving on the Council, which we will be launching in November."
When asked what question he feels will rise on the show he said: "They will probably call in and ask 'Are you really going to do something this time?"
He added: "This facility should have been in place a long time ago.
"That is why I would like to keep the people informed to what is going on and the progress that has been made."
Minister Butler said that on the radio program he would be informing the public of the events planned for November including, the naming of the Homeless Advisory Council and the release of his production entitled: 'Out Among the Ins' a documentary of the homeless problem in Bermuda.
The Minister will appear on the Everest DeCosta Talk Show which will air at 1.15 p.m. on FM 89. Also appearing on the show will be Assistant Cabinet Secretary, Marva-Jean O'Brien.
They will all be taking questions from the public on the issue of homelessness.
