Bermuda name national side
Bermuda's 18-man squad for the Shell/Umbro Cup, announced last night.
Also surviving from the World Cup campaign is coach Gary Darrell who will act as Clyde Best's assistant. His knowledge of the players will be vital as Bermuda relaunches their international programme after four years. The tournament qualifying competition begins in Kingston, Jamaica, next weekend.
The team will no doubt be built around the likes of goalkeeper Dwayne Adams, defenders Neil Paynter, Kentoine Jennings, Leroy Stevens, Voorhees Astwood and Elliott Jennings, who played against Jamaica in 1992.
However, starting positions cannot be taken for granted as the squad contains the three best goalkeepers on the Island in Adams, Troy Hall and Timmy Figureido. There are also plenty of central defenders but with no genuine fullbacks it would appear players will be asked to fit into those places.
That is what happened in 1992, when Astwood found himself playing at left-back. He just might be asked to play in that position again, while Lionel Furbert is capable of playing at right-back.
Newcomers Mark (Beaver) Ray of Devonshire Colts and Reggie Tucker of Dandy Town may get starting roles in midfield, depending on the formation Best and Darrell decide upon.
Up front, the unavailability of professionals Shawn Goater and Kyle Lightbourne has created chances for Dandy Town pair Carlos Smith and Darron Simons and Rangers' Ascento Russell to get their first taste of senior international football.
Warren can play on the left side of midfield or attack, although he will probably have to wait until the crucial match against Jamaica next Sunday to make his debut as his Seventh Day Adventist beliefs will prevent him from playing in the match on Friday evening.
The captaincy of the team could go to either goalkeeper Adams, who captained the under-23s in Jamaica two years ago, or defenders Paynter or Kentoine Jennings.
Elliott Jennings, as the most experienced of the attacking players, is another possibility, having captained North Village in the past.
Meanwhile, the BFA and Creative Associates have scrapped any plans to charter a flight to Jamaica because of poor response, meaning there is not expected to be much fan support for the team. All persons who paid deposits for the charter can collect their refunds at the BFA office.
