Canaries stun leaders

Swallows A 1 Canaries A 2 Canaries produced the upset of the season when they beat league leaders Swallows.

They came out more determined, playing with an aggressive four-man forward line and immediately put pressure on Swallows' defence. They were kept at bay for the first half but went a goal up after the break when Lisa DeSilva scored after a one-on-one with the 'keeper.

Canaries' second came from a penalty flick which was converted by Rhonda Rawlins.

Swallows responded with Cath Griffiths, playing her last game for the team, managing to pull a goal back. But their hopes of salvaging a draw disappeared when a goalbound shot went in but was disallowed after the ball was adjudged to have hit an attackers' foot.

Swallows B 1 Canaries B 0 Swallows began the game the stronger team and continued in that vein throughout. Excellent work by the midfield created the breakthrough, Jenny Burrell receiving a great cross from Kim Stevens who put the ball in the net.

Swallows continued their attacking play in the second half but Canaries' goalkeeper was in excellent form.

Towards the end of the game, 'keeper Donna Nicholson pulled off a great diving save to prevent a Canaries equaliser.

Bluebirds B 1 Swifts B 1 Both teams squandered chances in the first half of what turned out to be a scrappy game.

Swifts were first on the scoresheet but Bluebirds came back and equalised through Deanna Didyk.

Bluebirds A 1 Swifts A 0 Bluebirds came away victorious when Lori Spoltore scored the only goal in an otherwise uneventful match.

Cardinals B won by default due to Orioles B being unable to field a team.

Men's League Police 0 Chameleons 6 Chameleons proved too strong for Police in this one-sided encounter.

David Hosier started the rout and by the end of the first half Chameleons were 4-0 ahead, the other goals coming from Steve Moreton, Mark Pettingill and William Woods.

Despite a less impressive performance in the second period, Chameleons added to their score through two strikes by P. Illston.

Rebels 2 Panthers 0 The young Panthers played well during the entire match against a short-handed opposition. But despite dominating territory they were always a step behind the more skilful Rebels midfield.

Panthers kept the score even until the 61st minute when David Gutteridge netted. The youngsters had chances of their own -- Chris Chapman and Gregory Rose both hitting the post. But Rebels wrapped up the game with a second goal towards the end.
