Gibbs Hill Lighthouse re-opens today after being closed for repairs for ten months.
The world-famous lighthouse has been closed to repair damage incurred by Hurricane Fabian in 2003. The repairs included replacement of the system that drives the rotating light.
The Ministry also repaired the exterior railing and painted both the interior and exterior of the lighthouse.
A demonstration of the effective use of amateur radio communication in Bermuda, which was postponed last Saturday because of the weather, is due to be held today in Hamilton.
At Albuoy?s Point the public has the chance to see how quickly a temporary radio broadcast and receiving station can be created and tuned in to communicate with people as far away as Australia and Japan.
The Radio Society of Bermuda is holding a field day to demonstrate the continued usefulness of amateur radio.
A small radio station with an antenna capable of communicating with the rest of the world will be rigged-up in the morning and remain in place for the day to allow the public to see for themselves what it is all about.
Live demonstrations will take place between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
A teenager caught with a small amount of cannabis was given a second chance by a magistrate yesterday.
Senior Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo told Danai Burns, 17, of Texas Road, St. David?s, that if he screwed up the opportunity to go to college he had no one to blame but himself.
The youngster admitted possession of 0.4 grams of the drug. It was found in a white paper twist on his person after he was stopped by Police on February 7.
Burns said: ?I apologise to the court for having the drug on me and I will never use it again.? He said he liked to play sports and wanted to go away to college.
His mother told the court he had been on probation previously for traffic offences. She said: ?I don?t think he really understands the gravity. I don?t think he understands how it?s going to impact on him in the future.?
Mr. Tokunbo gave Burns a 12-month conditional discharge, adding: ?I?m giving him a chance.?
A thief made off with a laptop computer on Monday evening after breaking into a Paget home.
The female resident of the home told Police on Thursday that the silver Sony Vaio laptop was stolen on Monday between 7.30 p.m. and 8 p.m.
A Pembroke property was also broken into this week and $250 were stolen. A member of staff told Police that someone gained entry to their business between 1.15 p.m. on Wednesday and 8.20 a.m. on Thursday and stole the cash.
