Zahkie makes clean sweep

led home the 50cc class in the fifth round of the Pepsi Motocross Nationals at Coney Island on Sunday.

Gary Cann (80 B class), Ziko Majors (80 C), Duprey Joell (125 B) and Ashley Simmons (125 B) all won two out of three to lead their classes while Otis Ingham was the sole entrant in the 250s.

On a perfect day for racing, Iris won by a large margin over his 50cc rivals as positions remained the same through all three races. Craig Smith finished with three seconds and Kellen Lewis with three thirds.

All five of the 65cc riders returned to action with Chad Sutherland lifting overall honours with a first and two seconds compared to Zahkie MacIntosh's two firsts and a fourth. Tullio Escolastica, who had sat out previous races, returned to place third with a second and two thirds.

Gary Cann and Lorenzo Burch, the only two 80 B riders, raced well ahead of the 80 C class but a protest against Cann for rough riding means his victory is not official.

Among the 80 C riders, Zico Majors emerged with his first overall win after recovering from a thrown chain in the first moto to win the next two. Melonie Munro placed second overall and Gary Blackwell third with an improving Antoine Bean fourth.

Duprey Joell looked impressive as he wrapped up his first overall victory in the 125 B class, taking on Ingham on his 250cc bike and on some laps leading the way.

Craig Panchaud grabbed second and Wentworth Tucker third.

The 125 C class was the largest of the day with 14 riders and produced some close racing throughout with eventual winner Ashley Simmons returning after a two week lay-off.

Simmons placed third in the first moto but rebounded to win the next two.

Cavon Perinchief took second overall ahead of third placed Craig Ferguson.

All Bermuda Autocycle Union members are asked to attend a meeting today at BIU headquarters to discuss changing the direction of the race track.
