Food giant, local charity team up
$12,000 donation.
The cash was raised with a promotion organised by Kraft dairy products.
Shoppers who bought two Kraft products at supermarkets were offered a Kraft cookery book for free, provided they donated $10 to The Physical Abuse Centre.
Well over 1,000 books were sold, raising an impressive $12,000 for the centre, which will be used for general operating expenses.
The centre's June Augustus said the fund-raising campaign was such a success, she hoped to link up with Kraft next year to re-run the promotion.
"Our budget is $300,000 a year, so whatever funds we get will be used towards that,'' she said.
"We would like to thank Kraft and all the volunteers who helped to sell the books and, of course, those who donated.
"The promotion was such a success, we would very much like to do it again next year.
"People have been calling every day to see if we have any of the books left.'' Maura McCarthy, Advertising and Promotions Manager for Kraft Food International, said the company approached the centre to ask how it could help after hearing about the good work it did for both men and women on the Island.
She said: "Kraft has not done anything like this before in Bermuda, but it has sponsored a lot of charities internationally, especially those dealing with domestic violence.
"We heard about The Physical Abuse Centre and wanted to help. It is the first time we have done something like this on the Island, but we intend to do it again. I think it was something everyone benefited from.'' The fund-raiser was organised with assistance from Robin Sheppard from Butterfield and Vallis, which acts as sales managers for Kraft in Bermuda.
