King takes charge in Tobago
Bermuda jumped to success on the first two days of the annual Carifta Games in Tobago.
Overseas-based Arantxa King was the toast of the Island's team when she mined gold on Saturday afternoon in the Under-17 Girls long jump. However, Kijaun Wilkinson was the first Bermudian on the medal podium, taking silver in the Under-17 Boys high jump earlier at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet.
Latroya Darrell added to the tally yesterday with a silver in the high jump in her first year at the senior level.
Wilkinson soared 1.85 metres and was edged out for the gold by Bahamian Raymond Higgs who cleared the same height. Both failed to get over 1.90 metres. Marvin Dall of the Netherland Antilles was third with a height of 1.80 metres.
King, who lives in the USA, leapt to gold, landing 5.98 metres into the sandpit on her first effort. The Bermudian competitor easily conquered Francine Simpson of Jamaica (5.49 metres) and Chantel Malone of the British Virgin Islands (5.25 metres).
More than 500 athletes from 26 Caribbean countries are competing in the Easter weekend meet. Jamaica are heavily favoured to repeat as champions having won a record 79 medals, including 37 golds, at last year's games here.
The Jamaicans led the field after a strong showing on Saturday, sweeping the 1,500 metres in the Under-17 and Under-20 categories. Jamaica also took gold in the Under-20 discus with a throw of 51.32 metres.
Host nation Trinidad & Tobago was second in the medal standings after landing five gold medals Saturday, including the Boys Under-20 400 metres, Girls Under-20 100 metres and Girls Under-20 long jump. The Bahamas also landed gold on the opening day in the Boys Under-17 high jump.
The games, originally slated for Grenada until it was devastated by Hurricane Ivan last year, finish today.
