Thompson swoops for Hornets' Russell
Premier Division new-boys Somerset Eagles have swooped for Bermuda Hogges striker Antwan Russell as coach Kenny Thompson strengthens his team for the coming season.
The 22-year-old, who has scored one goal for Hogges so far this campaign, joins for the West End outfit from top-flight rivals Dandy Town along with Bermuda Under-23 defender Shakir Smith.
Thompson has signed a total of nine players so far this summer including Southampton Rangers pair Travis Wilkinson and Anthony Rocker Jr., and Damon Swan and Richard Campbell from neighbours Somerset Trojans.
Bermuda international Russell, a former Island Soccer League (ISL) golden boot winner, is likely to spearhead an attack that already boasts last year's First Division leading goal scorer Darren Dowling.
Another big name handing in a transfer request Russell's Hogges team-mate Jared Peniston who has rejoined former club Dandy Town from Shaun Goater's North Village after just one season. Hornets have also drafted experienced Hogges defender Tokia Russell, brother of Antwan, from PHC.
Besides losing Smith and Russell to Eagles, Hornets have seen defensive siblings David and Ernest Signor return to their club of origin, St. George's, while winger Jahron Dickinson also moves back to the First Division challengers from Hornets.
Newly appointed St. George's Colts coach Richard Todd said he was thrilled with the players he has brought in so far this summer.
"These three players will add a lot to the overall group, not only the technical side but also experience in the Premier Division which is something we need", said Todd. "I think that their desire to come back to help their community was a significant part in this. The players are very interested and want to see the club reach the goal of getting to the top flight."
