I'll cheer on from the stands – Scott
Former Bermuda Hogges utility-man Jelani Scott will be cheering on Kyle Lightbourne's men from the bleachers this season after choosing not to renew his contract.
The Somerset Trojans skipper, who filled in impressively at right-back last term, said he was unable to fully dedicate himself to the Hogges because of other commitments.
Other local leading lights deciding not renew their Hogges deals are Devonshire Cougars captain Kwame Steede, who led the Hogges during their inaugural campaign, and North Village's Ralph Bean and Kofi Dill.
But Scott is now backing their replacements to make an immediate impact and help the USL-D2 semi-professional outfit continue their progression.
"All of the players selected have the ability to play at that level and I wish them all the best this season," said Scott, whose Trojans side recently won Promotion from the First Division.
"I informed Kyle Lightbourne that I would not be able to dedicate myself to the Hogges this season because of other commitments.
"He understood my reasons and respected my decision. But the team looks solid and I look forward to seeing them play this season.
He added: "It's good to see new players in the team getting an opportunity, and hopefully they can help the Hogges improve on the last two seasons.
"I'm sure the coaching staff picked the players who will be fully committed to the team."
The Hogges new-boys include Hamilton Parish's Jamie Smith, Dandy Town's Antwan Russell, PHC's Tokia Russell and Keston Lewis. It's understood Somerset Eagles' Trinidad Marlon Rojas, Hornets Raymond Beach and Boulevard pair Chae Simmons and Michael Parsons are also set to sign.
Hogges coach Lightbourne said he would be watching Bermuda Under-23s series of matches against USL-D2 opposition this summer to run the rule over the Island's best young talent.
"Now with Bermuda Football Association being involved with the Under-23 playing the teams that come down, it will give the next group of players coming through an insight to what the USL is all about," he said.
"We won't being going forward blind, we can have a look at those who are capable of stepping up and those who can't. I think we have some players who look like they can make the next step but until given the opportunity no-one will ever know.
"This is what this team was set up for ¿ being a platform for players to get looked at and a chance to better their play."
Hogges play a double header in the US this week and will take on Crystal Palace Baltimore tomorrow and Real Maryland Monarchs on Saturday.
