Shelly Bay playground to be renovated
The Ministry of the Environment, Telecommunications and E-Commerce (METEC) and the Department of Parks are renovating the Shelley Bay playground in February and are keeping the environment in mind.
The popular playground was built in 1993 and is one of six in the National Park System, but heavy use, exposure because of its location on a beach and lack of spare parts have made it difficult to maintain.
The renovation will be a chance to enhance the play experience for children and to use environmentally-friendly material on the playground such as compost toilets.
The Ministry said: "The new play equipment is made entirely of recycled plastic and secured with stainless steel fixing.
"Not only does the use of recyclable materials support the Ministry's mandate to protect the environment, there are added benefits including reduction in maintenance, reduced repair costs and the extension of the life of the playground."
Furthering the environmentally friendly campaign, the old, wooden play equipment will be stored and used if there is need for replacement parts on other playgrounds.
The Ministry said: We have been watching this type of play equipment installed at Somersfield Academy over the last 18 months to see how it has held up in Bermuda's environment.
"It has done very well."
The playground covers almost 0.2 acres and the new renovations will not expand the play area, but simply will make it easier to maintain and more enjoyable for children.
The playground will be closed for the month of February to complete the renovations.
