Crumpler's team heads for Vegas

National team player Chris Crumpler and his Bermuda Basketball Association (BBA) junior national select team left the Island yesterday for Las Vegas where they will compete in the Amare Stoudemire Invitational.

Crumpler, who will coach the side, has run his eye over many players over the past three months and said making the final draft was a tough decision.

Trials began in late September with pupils from all schools invited to take part.

Crumpler has been taking junior national teams to overseas invitational tournaments for the past two years and is looking to continue the trend.

Amare Stoudemire is a professional NBA player for the Phoenix Suns. His tournament runs from December 19 to 23.

Bermuda's squad consists of 12 players and three reserves with Crumpler and Dale Jackson as coaches, and Rickey Watts and Mike Smith assisting.

Not only were the players judged on their on-court performances, they also had to meet strict academic standards and community responsibilities.

Bermuda's team: Kevin Minors, captain, (Warwick Academy) Anthony Furbert (CedarBridge), Tejour Riley (Georgetown, Ontario High), Chris Corday (Saltus), Tere Robain (Berkeley), Jonathan Lowe (Bermuda College), Alex McLeod (Saltus), Kariim O'Conner (CedarBridge), Ra'ees Tankard (Warwick Academy), Erik Pearson (Saltus), Tevis Spence (Warwick Academy), Juron Tucker (Warwick Academy).

Reserves - Joshua Reid, Dion Easton, and Khavion Brown.

n Bermudian Jenaya Wade-Fray scored a career-high 27 points as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) women's basketball team picked up a 69-56 non-conference win against Clemson on Saturday night.

Senior Wade-Fray had an evening to remember as she helped the Lady Mocs even their season record at 5-5.

Wade-Fray kept UTC on top with aggressively driving to the basket, making three lay-ups in the half-court set and sank two free throws to give the Lady Mocs a 34-29 lead midway through the first half.

Clemson tried to chip away at the lead in the opening minutes of the second half, but Wade-Fray sparked another run with a 3-pointer to put UTC up 42-31.

She would hit another one a minute later to give the Lady Mocs a 45-33 advantage.

Freshman Michelle Davis made it three-in-a-row from deep to extend the lead to 48-34 with nine minutes left.

Every time Clemson made a run, Wade-Fray hit a big shot for the Lady Mocs.

Tigers' Bryelle Smith cut the lead to 48-40 at 7.14 mark with a 3-pointer from the corner.

Yet, Wade-Fray answered with a 3-pointer of her own to put UTC back up 51-40 with just under seven minutes left.

Smith again cut the lead to six, 51-45, with another three with five minute left in the game.

But Wade-Fray came right back and got the shooter's roll from the corner to give the Lady Mocs a 54-45 lead with five minutes left.

Wade-Fray, with just five first-half points, shot 9-of-18 from the floor, 5-of-11 from 3-point range and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

She now has 173 career 3-point field goals, passing Miranda Warfield for third place in the university's all-time list.
