And the most prestigious trophy of all, the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club Trophy for first overall, was presented to Doug Ely, skipper of 46-foot sloop Dakota .

The boat from Milford, Connecticut, completed the 645-mile crossing from Buzzards Bay off the south coast of Massachusetts, in a corrected time of three days, 11 hours, 26 minutes and 18 seconds.

Temptress , the boat which finished second on corrected time took the Blue Water Sailing Club Board of Governers Trophy for the first yacht to finish.

The Rhode Island-based 51-foot sloop, skippered by Richie Schulman and with four Bermudians -- Brian Hillier, Malcolm (Chillibop) Wilson, Ron Stan and Billy Dawson -- among the crew, crossed the finishing line 92 hours, 11 minutes and 31 seconds after setting out from Marion.

The most successful of the five Bermudian boats among the fleet of 103 was Colin Couper's Babe , which won the Corporation of Hamilton Trophy and placed fourth overall.

Buudy Rego's Tsunami was the best of rest, finishing ninth overall and fifth in Class B.

Warren Brown's War Baby finished 43rd overall and 12th in Class A, Paul Hubbard's Bermuda Oyster was 60th overall and 12th in Class C, just ahead of David Roblin's Lullaby , which placed 63rd overall and fourth in Class F.

This year was the first time there had been separate classes for boats using celestial and electronic navigation, and those with the benefit of high-tech, electronic navigational aids came out well on top.

The first four boats overall in the race were also the top four in Class B, for the largest boats using electronic.

Flirt , the Class A winner, skippered by John Benfield, provided the best effort by a celestial boat, taking fifth place overall.
