Somerset rue missed chances

Had Somerset capitalised on three simple chances during this First Division match at Lord's yesterday they would have greatly enhanced their chances of survival.

But the one point earned from a game they deserved to win will still give the west enders some momentum in the end-of-season battle.

What must have been encouraging to Trojans' coach Randy Horton was the manner in which his young team fought against more experienced opponents who, admittedly, were without influential schemer Neil Robinson and forward Dwight Warren.

The Trojans should have taken a 2-0 lead by the half. After 21 minutes, just 11 yards from goal, young Jelani Scott could only partially strike a cross from Shawn Riley on the volley that went harmlessly in the direction of the goalkeeper.

Then after 26 minutes Rodre Wilson coolly beat two defenders but sent a thunderous left-footed shot over from just 15 yards.

But it was Boulevard who came up with the best effort of the game after 57 minutes when a blast from Tafari Outerbridge was brilliantly pushed over the bar by goalkeeper Winslow Williams.

From the resulting corner substitute Robert Wilson put a soft shot into the chest of Williams.

However, Somerset fought back to dominate the remainder of the game.

After 72 minutes the hard-working Scott out-paced two defenders and crossed from the left but unmarked substitute Jelani Butterfield mishit the ball from close range before it was hurriedly cleared.

Defending league champions Devonshire Colts took the lead midway through the first half through Ray Jones and Town equalised early in the second half through Chris Anderson to remain a point ahead of third-placed Boulevard.

Colts remain in sixth place with the draw but with five points separating them from Hotels and Somerset, the six places for the Martonmere Cup next season are all but wrapped up.
