Bascome grabs first Open title
Maybury in straight sets to win the Port Royal Open yesterday.
Bascome, at 20, the youngest member of Bermuda's promotion-winning Davis Cup team and less than half Maybury's age, eventually overcame his battling opponent 6-3, 6-4.
Bascome lived up to his top seeding in the absence of defending champion Ricky Mallory, Michael Way and Heineken Open champion Eldon Daniels.
Davis Cup captain Steve Bean said Maybury had put up a good fight.
"Sam did well to make the final in his first tournament back after a while and it was a match of long rallies,'' said Bean.
"Jenson has improved his serve considerably in collegiate tennis and that really helped him. He was 5-2 up in the second set, but Sam came back to 5-4, and then Jenson came up with some big serves to get him out of a hole.'' Gill Finnigan was the women's champion, also winning in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, against Shonette Wilson. Wilson's more aggressive tennis fell short against Finnigan's sheer consistency.
Bascome bagged his second trophy of the day in the men's doubles, as he teamed up with Mallory to defeat Stuart Smith and Mark Cordeiro in a hard-fought match 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
And Mallory also won a second trophy by partnering Samantha Todd to victory in the mixed doubles final against Maybury and Shelly Eve. Mallory and Todd won 10-8 in a marathon tie-breaker to take the first set 7-6 before winning the second set 6-3.
Finnigan and Gill Butterfield were women's doubles champions after their 6-3, 6-2 triumph againt Wilson and Eve.
In the men's B final, Jevon Roberts gained revenge for his defeat by Craig Bean in the same category at the Heineken Open. The 19-year-old Roberts prevailed in a tough three-setter, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
And the women's B final was very much a family affair, as sisters Sasha and Kara Fisher, both 13 years-old and playing in their first adult tournament, battled it out. Sasha took the title with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
Stanfield Smith beat Wilf Gonzalves in the senior men's singles final, while Julie Lunn beat Renee Heyliger to take the senior women's title.
Erica Hendricks and Nina Alami won the senior women's doubles, beating Iola Rocker and Patricia Pamplin in the final.
