Breaking News: Man dies following Friday shooting
Two men on a motorcycle gunned down three people after chasing another man along Court Street on Friday, Police revealed today.
And they confirmed Jamaican national James Lawes died, after 11 shots were fired at the men.
Two other victims - Maurice Martin, a Jamaican, and Robin Stovell, a Bermudian - are recovering from their injuries at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
The men were shot at the entrance to an alleyway next to Place’s Place bar in Dundonald Street at 11 p.m.
Police say the two men came south from Court Street.
They originally drove into the car park of the Jamaican Grill restaurant where they confronted a man, who ran off down the street.
The motorcycle followed in pursuit but the man escaped by jumping down a hill by the Emmanuel Baptist Church.
The men then rode east on Dundonald Street and into the eastern end of Place’s Place car park.
There, they mounted the sidewalk and headed west. When they reached the alleyway between the bar and Armstrong’s Barber Shop, the rear passenger alighted and fired 11 shots.
The three victims were standing in the entrance to the alleyway.
After discharging the firearm, the motorcycle took off west along the sidewalk, turned back into Court Street and headed north.
Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro said at a press conference this afternoon: “This is a crowded and busy area. Clearly people will have seen this, particularly as there were actions involved which would have alerted their attention.
“The suspects on their approach were riding on the sidewalk and when they left they were travelling at a very high speed.
“We know people saw these riders and I’m urging the public to come forward.”
Police are appealing to anyone who was in the area of Dundonald Street and Court Street at that time to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 299-8115 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 1-800-8477.
