National squad in good shape for Glasgow
assignment of squaring off against a touring Glasgow University side on Saturday, September 18, at National Sports Club.
National team coach Kieron Peacock confirmed yesterday that primary consideration was given to the diligent and dedicated players who have been participants during the weekly training sessions at Horseshoe Bay Beach during the last two months. But Peacock also said he is particularly pleased with the physical condition of the players chosen and stressed that their strong running skills will be fully exploited against the largely unknown Glasgow team.
"We don't know much about them,'' Peacock admitted yesterday. "But we do know that they will be fit and motivated and they have been training just as hard as we have.'' Selected to the Bermuda squad are some familiar names with the bulk of the 15 starters from Teachers with wing Andre Simons, outside half Scott Correia, scrum half Andrew Correia, prop Billy McNiven, hooker Dave Cooke, lock Ashley Redmond and flanker Terry Walsh included. Patrick Cooper and Richard Raistrick, also of Teachers, were named as substitutes.
Perennial powerhouse Renegades will have four starters -- full-back Phil Heaney, wing Tom Dixon, prop Danny Forsythe and number eight Ali Nicholl suiting up against Glasgow while two others, David Taylor and Sean Kelly, have been named as substitutes.
Police, who will have a challenging time coming up with a team of their own when the season commences next month, have two players starting, including their team captain, flanker Sean Field, and lock Danny Cozens. Gareth Davies and Shane DeMille will serve as substitutes. Police lost many of their players after they left the island last spring.
A pair of centres, Keith Beattie and David Conway, have been selected from Mariners while Jonah Jones and Gavin Corcoran will see action only if there are injuries.
Peacock said the 4 p.m. starting time of the game will serve as an advantage for Bermuda since, "it'll probably be 80 degrees and the Glasgow players are coming from a place where it's usually 60 degrees. They simply won't be used to playing in these conditions.'' Peacock, however, admitted "we still expect them to come at us very hard.'' He figures his team will have to absorb the brunt of Glasgow's pressure during the first quarter before they will be able to adapt a proper game plan during the second half.
"We'll stick with the same line-up during the game,'' said Peacock.
"Normally at this time of year our players are only beginning to get into their training. So they are in good shape. Usually they wouldn't be in this kind of shape until the second week of October.'' Peacock's concern with fitness extends to more than just the Glasgow match.
The national squad will be one of six teams participating in a Caribbean tournament from November 27 to December 5 -- the other teams are Trinidad, Venezuela, Guyana, Martinique and Guadaloupe. He also has the World Cup qualifying match next March against USA Eagles heavy on his mind.
DANNY FORSYTHE -- Ex-Renegades captain will suit up against Glasgow.
