Goater, Lightbourne have 20-20 vision
Lightbourne are aiming for 20-goal seasons in England this season.
And that would greatly increase the pair's hopes of moving to clubs in higher divisions. Both found the net at the weekend, Goater scoring his eighth in a 2-0 win over Leyton Orient and Lightbourne his eighth from a header as Walsall had an away draw with Hartlepool.
"I saw Kyle on the weekend and we both believe anything around 18 to 20 goals would definitely get us a move,'' said Goater yesterday. "Personally that's something we've set for ourselves.'' Last season Goater hit 13 goals in 25 games but with about a quarter of the season gone he expects to pass that total.
"It's just a matter of keeping my form, and my training is geared towards maintaining the form, so I can't see me not achieving it,'' said Goater, who leads the Rotherham scoring.
"There are always times when you have bad spells but hopefully I'll be prepared for that and get through it.
"Between the beginning of the season and December I was saying 10 (goals) but it looks like I'm going to have more than 10. To my knowledge there are more games after December than there are at the beginning.'' Despite recently signing a new two-year deal with Rotherham which came with an improved salary, the player accepts that a move could come at any time, requiring a move to another part of the country.
"That's what affected my form at the beginning of the season, the thought of it happening. You continue to wait and it is affecting your game,'' he said of the expected move to First Division club Port Vale.
"Right now I'm not too bothered about any rumours or things that are printed in papers until I actually get a call that says `come and have a chat and sign these papers'.'' Goater, who is near Leeds and Sheffield, would ideally like to move south where it is warmer. For that reason, he said, a move further north would be out of the question.
"They would have to be paying a lot of money, and pay for a house in Bermuda, too -- one in Tucker's Town,'' Goater joked.
Lightbourne ended a goalless period by giving Walsall the lead at the weekend only to see Hartlepool equalise minutes later.
"He's had his bad spell, so to speak,'' said Goater. "The good thing was in that time he still managed to stay among the top scorers.'' The Bermuda internationals are a source of inspiration for each other.
"Most definitely, if I'm down and he's banging in the goals then I go up to see him to get some of that to rub off,'' said Goater.
Lightbourne is pleased to have ended a run of about seven games without a goal. "I'm happy with the way I've been playing, I feel I've been very consistent this season,'' said Walsall's top scorer.
"In the games I didn't score there wasn't a big worry because I felt I was playing well. Mind you I had a few chances that on another day would have gone in.'' Lightbourne's first aim this season is to pass the 10 goals he scored for Walsall last season. He admits the 20-goal mark is within his reach.
"Providing there are no injuries and I'm playing regular,'' he says. "Right now I'm on course for it.
"My first goal was to score more than last year, but last year I was in midfield and this year I'm up front. If I get one every two games it would work out.'' Walsall take on top team Bury on Saturday while Rotherham are away to mid-table Brighton.
