That is the view of people involved in an investigation into the incident which happened in May.

The family of 84-year-old Mrs. Eva Stovell were forced to take her to hospital in a car after an ambulance failed to arrive at the home where she was staying.

She died 18 hours after being admitted to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Some of Mrs. Stovell's family are calling for the dismissal of the attendant on duty who they claim refused to respond to the emergency.

Mrs. Stovell was suffering from shortness of breath, which proved to be pneumonia.

Her family claimed they were contacted by the Matilda Smith Williams Home, where Mrs. Stovell was living, after a nurse unsuccessfully tried to summon the ambulance.

They said they called the attendant but again he did not believe it was an emergency. The family then drove Mrs. Stovell to the hospital where they accused the attendant of "life-endangering behaviour''.

Hospitals administrator Mr. Hume Martin has refused to take any action until a full investigation is completed.

He has been involved in discussions with the family, the attendant and the home, including the supervisor from St. Paul's AME Church Pastor the Rev.

Rev. Beaman said: "We do not want to make any statement because we are talking about individuals' lives -- the family, the staff at the home and the attendant concerned.

"We have all agreed that our main concern must be that this never happens again.''
