Man accused of murder makes court appearance

A man charged with murdering young mother Shakeya DeRoza attended a brief hearing in Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Jermaine Wellington Pearman, 36, has been in custody since he was first charged on July 15.

Pearman, the victim's estranged boyfriend and father of her two young children, is further charged with possessing a knife with a seven-inch blade on the Railway Trail in Sandys. He has not been required to enter pleas since the matter must be dealt with by the Supreme Court.

Ms DeRoza, who worked as a corrections officer, collapsed and died in front of Rose's Flower Shop in Middle Road, Sandys on the afternoon of Friday, July 10.

Eyewitnesses said the 23-year-old ran from her apartment in Paynter Lane to the flower shop and the Steel City clothing store, bare-chested and covered in blood.

Later that afternoon, Police apprehended Pearman along the Railway Trail behind Somerset Bridge Post Office. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after inflicting an injury on himself.

Pearman was flanked by several prison guards in court on Wednesday as prosecutor Carrington Mahoney asked Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo to list a further administrative hearing for two weeks' time, as paperwork is still being prepared.

Two brothers from St. Martin charged with importing cocaine

A pair of brothers from St. Martin have been charged with importing almost $700,000 worth of cocaine into Bermuda.

Damitro Williams, 22, and Myron Williams, 25 are further accused of possessing the drug with intent to supply it. Both the offences are said by prosecutors to have been committed on July 19 this year.

The brothers did not have to enter pleas to the charges when they appeared at Magistrates' Court yesterday as the matter must be dealt with by the Supreme Court. They must return to Magistrates' Court for an administrative hearing on August 12. Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo remanded them into custody until then.
