Fletcher in chase for first moto title
Super Scooter rider Jordan Fletcher believes he still has a chance to catch leader and team-mate Kenneth DeSilva after gaining seven points in the title chase over the weekend with only a handful of races left.
Heading down the final stretch of the Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club (BMRC) season, Fletcher grabbed a second in the first heat with leader DeSilva winning the moto, before Fletcher secured his first win of the weekend with DeSilva not making the podium..
With those results, the gap at the top has shortened to 23 points from 30 heading into the raceday, the new-boy still has high hopes of closing that gap and lifting his first BMRC title.
Although the points difference is still formidable, Fletcher will reflect on the fact that at the beginning of the season he was slower than his team-mate and has since reeled him in.
"I'm currently in second, with my team-mate in first place," said Fletcher. "It is pretty close because we are the same speed, have shared first and second throughout the season so the remainder of this year could shape up to be very interesting.
"At the beginning of the season he was faster than me but as the season has progressed I have slowly closed the gap."
The 19-year-old, who last year was racing powerboats, said although there was harmony among the riders "off the track, when the flag drops it is every man for himself" as the championship battle hots up, something that was shown on Sunday.
"This is my first season back and it feels good to be on the track. Last year I raced on the powerboating circuit and that was fun so to come and race in the Super Scooter class is just as exciting," he said.
Racing continues this weekend at the Bermuda Motorsports Park at Southside, with the first race set to start at 1.30 p.m.
