Wolves roar in nine goal thriller
Lowly Wolves went on the rampage, punishing a dull home side into the bargain with a blistering performance at the BAA ground yesterday afternoon.
With the temperature soaring,, the away team, putting on a display full of flair and invention, proved too hot for the current league champions.
It took less than two minutes for Wolves to get into their stride, with Khari Sharrieff catching Vasco's defence cold after a wonderful combination move with Nakia Smith.
While Vasco seemed content to repeatedly hoof the ball upfield, Wolves made their intentions known from the start, putting together a string of moves in the opening quarter and exploiting Vasco's weak left flank.
It was that route which proved fruitful midway through the first half when Jared Peniston -- who played an absolute blinder throughout -- danced and skipped his way through Vasco's defence before selflessly laying the ball on for the oncoming Sharrieff for an easy second.
Three minutes later and Wolves were three goals to the good, again after some sterling work from the skillful Peniston who was able to set up Mark Ray.
With half time looming Wolves appeared to be coasting to an easy victory. But then came the Vasco fightback and they were rewarded with two goals just before the whistle for the break.
A rare offensive that was going nowhere brought dividends after Keith Jennings was needlessly brought down in the penalty area. Jennings himself converted the subsequent spot kick, sending Wolves keeper Hewvonne Brown the wrong way.
Brown then produced the save of the day when, wrong-footed, he seemed to change direction in mid air, stretch and get down low to paw a fierce drive away.
Despite his heroics the acrobatic keeper was punished only moments later when the resulting corner, taken short and then whipped in by Diallo Sharieff, was met by Keith Jennings, who rose unchallenged to head home.
While Vasco may have been guilty of starting the match slowly, their opponents were certainly equally guilty of the charge in the Wolves roar the second half.It took less than a minute for the home side to pull level after the break.
Under no pressure whatsoever Wolves keeper Brown decided to launch an incoming backpass upfield. Had he connected the ball would have no doubt ended up halfway up Par-La-Ville Road. Alas, mis-timing his kick, Brown missed the ball completely and not even a desperate and undignified scramble back could stop the ball from rolling into the net.
However, within ten minutes Wolves were in front again after substitute Nathan Webb twice latched on to loose balls on the edge of the six yard area to score.
Vasco were in no condition to launch a second comeback although Jamael Smith got them a fourth with a brilliant curler in the dying minutes. Vasco: T.Figureido, D.Sharrieff, W.Augustus, C.Roberts, K.Burchall, K.Jennings, J.Belboda, C.Anderson, C.Smith, Q.Paynter, D.Basden.
