Mother, friend will have to pay Crown over bail jumper

The mother of a man who fled the country rather than face drug charges will have to forfeit $10,000 in sureties.

Dennis Wright, 28, was scheduled to appear in court Monday alongside Kyle Ingham, 25, and Kenneth Butterfield, 33, to face charges of importing $800,000 of cannabis.

While both Ingham and Butterfield pled guilty to importing the drugs, Wright never appeared.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court heard that despite having two passports taken from him, Wright boarded a flight to Canada on September 15, and three days later travelled into the United States by bus.

After Wright failed to attend court, Puisne Judge Carlise Greaves ordered a warrant for his arrest, and issued a summons for Wright's two sureties, his mother Cindy Caisey and Ralph Robinson, a friend.

Ms Caisey, told the court that she had been speaking with her son every few weeks until September, when he stopped responding.

"It was before Hurricane Igor," she said. "I had been calling him, but I could never get him. I didn't know where he was.

"Then he called me and told me he was away. He just left. I never thought my son would leave."

Both Ms Caisey and Mr. Robinson were ordered to forfeit $10,000 in instalments of $500 a month.
