St. George's is alive and doing well – Opposition Senator

Opposition Senator Suzann Roberts Holhouser expressed support for St. George's yesterday, saying it was not struggling as much as "naysayers" would have people believe.

"I want to clarify to all the naysayers that St. George's was a dying town," she said.

"The Minister of Tourism and Transport [Premier Ewart Brown] has aided in the rebirth of an exciting and entertaining environment which I would encourage anyone who has a few hours on the weekend to visit."

She said Dr. Brown had ensured that passengers on visiting cruise ships were being ferried into the town.

"The tourists are getting bussed down," she said.

"We've got walking tours of St. George's and live entertainment in the Town Square. It is what I call the epitome of old Bermuda.

"St. George's is alive and doing well. If more Bermudians from the west end could make their way down at the weekend that would be awesome."

Also speaking in the Motion to Adjourn yesterday, Government Senate Leader David Burch called on churches and the community to support Government and the Police in their fight against gang violence.

"We are going to fail and fail miserably if the churches and people of this Country sit back and wait for those two entities alone to solve our problems," he said.

"I'm calling on everyone in this Country to step up to the plate and accept your own responsibility for what we face."

He also said young people should be encouraged to nurture their interests and talents.

"Whether it is by blood or in your neighbourhoods, you can do little things," he said.
