Norman the conquerer
Norman Furtado made short work of his off-form opponent Kirk Caza when he brushed him aside in three straight games 9-2, 9-2, 9-2 in men's Division One action during last night's play in the Fast Forward Freight National Squash Championships.
Caza, however, remains a contender in the Veteran's Division.
Ryan Bell had little difficulty in his consolation match against James Hubbard winning in straight games 9-5, 9-5, 10-8.
Two tough matches back to back took their toll on veteran John Stout and, despite a huge effort in the second, he was unable to capitalise on his early lead and went down to Harry Mackenzie 9-1, 10-8, 9-4.
Mel Caines' fast pace and great court coverage gave him a 3-0 victory over Jan Brewer who, not so long ago, was the runner up in this tournament.
Mike Harvey was made to fight all the way for his victory in Division Two, narrowly defeating Jamie Sapsford by the margin of 9-4, 8-9, 9-5, 10-8. It was a close match with long hard rallies throughout.
Matt Lawson survived a scare against Adam Hawley when he came back from two games down to win the third game 9-7 despite being behind 6-4. He then cruised to 9-0 while Hawley conserved his strength for the fifth. That went down to the wire - Hawley catching up to eight-all only to serve out and allow Lawson to rattle off three winners for the match.
A quick victory went to Rick Aspin over Amit Bhatnagar in Division Three, Aspin losing just three points in the entire match.
Also in that division Gary Ince came back from being 2-0 down to take the third game 10-8 and then cruise to a 9-1, 9-2 over his tenacious but tired opponent Dave Andrews.
Ladies Division Three saw two very tight matches. Jane Maycock and Aza Zuill split the first two games but Maycock took control from the start of the third and ran out the next two games for the loss of just three points.
A similar score figured in the tie between Diane Elliott and Zoe Walker. They split the first two then Elliott upped the pace and disposed of her opponent 9-3, 9-1.
Play continues today at 5.40 p.m. with semi-final action. Members of the public are invited to attend.
