Art consultant: Holly Mazar-Fox with artwork by Jon Legere

Holly Mazar-Fox moved to the island three years ago and wanted to be part of the community.

As an art consultant she decided the best way to start was to get to know Bermuda’s artists – her eye was drawn to Jon Legere’s abstract, collage-style pieces.

That he lived in New York didn’t faze her. Several e-mails later the pair decided to combine their talents to raise money for Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. Three versions of an original, Bermuda-inspired print created by Mr Legere are now on sale with all proceeds going toward the charity.

“The Centre is a great cause that is suffering as a result of Covid-19,” Ms Mazar-Fox said. “Covid-19 has put a significant strain on the Centre’s ability to provide diagnostic imaging services and treat patients with radiation therapy amid new social distancing protocols.

“We specifically chose Bermuda Cancer and Health because everyone has been impacted by cancer, either having a loved one or family member impacted. These are unique pieces. There are 35 of each. Jon made these specifically for Bermuda Cancer Aid, which is what we are calling this initiative. We are playing on the Bermuda Triangle, having three sides.”

Mr Legere used lots of bold pinks, aquas and golds in creating the prints. Printed in Brooklyn using a silk screen process, they went on sale in October at a cost of $300 each, two for $550 or three for $750.

He has included some fantastic shapes similar to the actual architecture of Bermuda,” Ms Mazar-Fox said. “They are really exciting. Sales have not been too bad but I think the Covid-19 spike in November has been a bit difficult as people are focused on different things. For me and Jon, it has just been about getting the word out.”

Her hope is that the project brings much needed funds to the cancer charity and also raises the profile of Mr Legere’s art and her business, Mazar-Fox Art Consulting.

She launched it in July, having operated in Canada for five years. She helps clients source art for homes and offices and offers art appraisals, art talks and general advice on the subject.

“Anything that falls under the art remit, I am your person to deal with that,” said Ms Mazar-Fox, who moved here after her husband, Ben Fox, found a job at Hiscox Re.

Originally from Toronto, she has a bachelor’s in art history from Yale University, a master's in art history from The Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London, and a law degree from City University of London.

“I spent over ten years working in art history, for an art non-profit in Washington DC,” she said. “I have worked in galleries, auction houses, and large museum institutions.

“I feel like over the years I have just collected all this knowledge base that has allowed me to launch my own business and be able to advise clients. I knew I wanted to do something art related but I wasn’t sure where I fit in. Becoming an art consultant was the perfect opportunity to blend business with art. Not many avenues allow you to do that.”

People often seek her out simply because they don’t know where else to start.

“The art industry, in general, can be very intimidating,” Ms Mazar-Fox said. “You can go into a gallery and if people don’t recognise you, they will just ignore you.

“Even auction sales, you could go in to tour and take a look [but] a lot of people feel intimidated. They don’t know what jargon to use. They don’t know if the price is appropriate. That is where I come in.”

She has directed clients here to a mixture of local and overseas art.

“There are some wonderful artists working here in Bermuda,” she said. “It is important for me to push Bermudian art and get it on people’s walls, especially homes and offices here. You should be investing in Bermuda art.”

Aside from Mr Legere, James Cooper is on her list of favourite artists along with photographers Meredith Andrews and Theresa Kirby-Smith.

She works with a range of budgets. Some of her clients are looking for their first piece and have $5,000 to spend; others have a lot more to play with.

“Art should be accessible to everyone,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what the size of your wallet is. Everyone should be able to have art on their walls.”
