ROLO will honour Island's road death victims on Sunday
Families and friends of those who have lost their lives on Bermuda's roads can come together at a National Day of Remembrance this weekend.
R.O.L.O. (Remembering Our Loved Ones) is inviting the community to support the inaugural event, to be held at the New Berkeley Institute on Sunday.
It will include a candlelit vigil and a roll call of all those who have lost their lives on the roads in the past 20 years.
The National Day of Remembrance coincides with the United Nations' World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims, held on the third Sunday of November.
The day is commemorated around the world with memorial services, marches and vigils.
In Bermuda, R.O.L.O. wants the day to be above all, a "celebration of life".
The event will include entertainment, with music from Shine Hayward, Larrita Adderley and Rickeesha Binns.
Angel Nottingham, R.O.L.O. President, said: "Road fatalities are becoming far too common here on the roads of Bermuda. The entire community is affected when one's life is lost in a tragic accident.
"We are encouraging the community to come out and support families and friends who have lost a loved one. Share in our first National Day of Remembrance here in Bermuda."
Mrs. Nottingham added: "We have a poem being recited by Little Miss Paradise Sinae Smith, and our guest speakers are David Minors from the Road Safety Council, Senator Marc Bean, and Anthony Richardson from Bermuda Health Council.
"We will be doing a roll call of the traffic victims from the past 20 years and there will also be a candle lighting period.
"Light refreshments will be given. We are asking families to bring a picture of their loved one or wear shirts with their loved one's pictures."
R.O.L.O. is a charity which was founded last year by the relatives of road accident victims.
It aims to provide support and comfort to grieving families and friends, with a counselling service at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and practical assistance.
R.O.L.O. also plans to compile a manual for distribution among the community.
It will feature contact numbers and advice, such as funeral parlour information and where families should go to obtain a death certificate or attend an inquest.
This year has seen a marked rise in the number of road accident fatalities.
The death of Tennison Fernando on September 29 marked the 13th death in the first nine months of the year, compared to 11 deaths for 2007.
The National Day of Remembrance takes place at the Berkeley Institute on Sunday between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
