BAA's Adams summoned to BFA hearing
of BAA, Arthur Adams was last night summoned before a Bermuda Football Association disciplinary hearing to answer charges of bringing the game into disrepute.
Adams has already publicly admitted directing racial remarks at referee Gregory Smith during a stormy Commercial League game between his club, BAA Wanderers, and North Village at BAA Field on Saturday, October 17.
BFA General Secretary David Sabir was unwilling to discuss specific details about the case yesterday, but he confirmed that the committee would only be dealing with Adams at this time.
Other players reported by the referee were sent off and would receive automatic match bans, he said.
When asked how the serious the BFA viewed the charges, Sabir added: "At this time all I am willing to say is that we are reacting to the referee's report and have charged Mr. Adams with bringing the game into disrepute.
"We are going to uncover the facts and not listen to any hearsay. Everything is centred around our disciplinary hearing.'' The case was not expected to be lengthy since Adams has not denied the charges, although he has said he was provoked by Smith into making his remarks by what he considered to be poor handling of the match.
"Everything got out of hand, I wasn't the only one cursing him, even the opposition was cursing him,'' said Adams earlier this month. "When a man in one half can give out six yellow cards and three red, all on one side, something has to be wrong.'' Adams, who also admitted that he asked the bartender at the club to have Smith escorted off the premises as he was having a drink following the game, could not be reached yesterday to comment on reports that he had quit as BAA president.
Club secretary Sandra Amott-Correia, while not denying that Adams had resigned, said she was unwilling to comment on the matter.
Smith has made it clear that the incident hasn't deterred him from refereeing, saying he considered the incident to be a one-off situation.
Adams has also said publicly that he intended to offer an apology to Smith.
