Premier and Ministers are caught up in evacuation scare

Premier Paula Cox and Cabinet members and staff wait outside the gates of the Cabinet grounds after the building evacuated when a suspicious package was discovered in the Cabinet building.

A suspicious package was found on Cabinet Grounds yesterday causing commotion as a handful of Government Ministers had to be evacuated from the building. The incident unfolded shortly before 11am when a member of staff came across the “suspicious” envelope and alerted police.Premier Paula Cox, Deputy Premier Derrick Burgess, Justice Minister Michael Scott, Tourism Minister Patrice Minors and Minister without Portfolio Michael Weeks were among those waiting outside as police and firefighters surveyed the package. After nearly two-and-a-half hours, a Government analyst in full white jumpsuit determined there was nothing harmful inside and allowed people back in.Lieutenant Wenda Roberts, of the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, said the package had a suspicious crumb-like substance on it, but said it was not a powder or a liquid.Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded with two vehicles, three support vehicles and nine personnel. Two fire fighters with breathing apparatus entered the building to seal the envelope in an air tight container to prevent contamination. It was then prepared for the Government analyst, Lt Roberts explained. She didn’t have the official records at hand yesterday, but said: “We do not get this very often. We did get a rush when we had the anthrax scare a few years ago.”The Bermuda Police Service also responded to the report of ”a suspicious envelope with an unknown substance”.A Police spokesman said the item was intercepted at the Cabinet Office and added: “As a result the appropriate protocols were followed and the Cabinet Office was evacuated and the Emergency Ordinance Disposal Unit of the Bermuda Police Service and the Bermuda Fire Service secured the “flat envelope”.“The Government Analyst was called and it was ascertained that the substance in the envelope was not a threat to anyone.”
