Stories about black America
African-American actress Kemba appears in two of her one-woman shows.
Presented by Universal Consciousness -- formed by Dr. Clark Godwin and his fiancee Regina Woods in January 1997 -- the two shows will feature separate presentations.
The first show centres on the inspiring story of Harriet `Moses' Tubman, the Maryland slave who not only managed to escape North, but returned an astonishing 19 times to lead over 300 of her fellow slaves to freedom.
The second presentation, `Sojourner Truth' traces the life of Isabella Baumfree, the twelfth of 13 children (all of whom were sold before she was born). Though unable to read or write, she possessed remarkable oratorical skills. These were put to good use as a speaker for women's rights and abolitionist programmes. In 1950, she gained wider acclaim for her autobiography, `Narrative of Sojourner Truth'.
Kemba, who describes herself as an actress, dramatist, vocalist, poet, playwright, choreographer, costume designer and producer, has toured extensively throughout the US. She formed her own company, American History Live, through which she aims to document through performance "the story of how America has treated the sons and daughters of Africa.'' Kemba will perform `Harriet Moses Tubman' at City Hall Theatre on Saturday, March 21 at 8 p.m. and `Sojourner Truth' on Sunday, March 22 at 4 p.m. Tickets ($30 per couple, $20 per person, $5 for senior citizens and students).
