Best gets first win
Uncle and nephew Elliott and Keith Jennings scored early and late in the first half to lead Bermuda to a hard-fought win over St. Martin in their second friendly match on the French island yesterday evening.
Keith, starting his first match for the Bermuda team, scored in the 15th minute after Elliott held up play and then slipped the youngster a pass from which he netted after showing excellent composure.
After St. Martin equalised midway through the half, Elliott restored the Bermuda lead just two minutes before the break, combining on the right with Shannon Burgess.
The win was the first for coach Clyde Best since he took over earlier this year, but he is under no illusion as to the task facing the team at the national level.
"The pace of soccer in Bermuda is so slow,'' said Best. "The best players we have, supposedly, are walking so it's easy for them.
"We're still learning, but what people have to realise is we've not played internationally for four years. From speaking to people associated with Bermuda teams in the past, the current players are very laid back.'' Best used a 3-5-2 formation and four changes were made to the team which lost 1-0 in their opening match. Dwayne Adams was in goal while Keith Jennings, Neil Paynter and Chris Sabir all started.
"We worked harder and as long as we work hard we can get something,'' added Best, who noted there was still much work to be done.
"People in Bermuda have to realise we're not the only country playing soccer.
This little country (St. Martin) has been playing internationals once a month for the last few months.'' Bermuda: D.Adams, Kent. Jennings, S.Smith, N.Paynter (D.Outerbridge); S.Burgess, S.Lewis, C.Sabir, R.Tucker (M.Ray), D.Boyles (V.Astwood); E.Jennings (D.Simons), K.Jennings (A.Russell).
