Broadway returns to Bermuda
`Broadway in Bermuda' revue which takes place at City Hall later this month.
"I am very excited about the show this year,'' says Two Island Productions co-founder and Bermuda resident Iva Peele. "We have some really amazing people taking part. Dana Moore, who was one of the stars of `Sweet Charity' is a really fantastic dancer. She worked extensively with Bob Fosse, so we are introducing dance into the show this time. That will bring the show to a different level -- we are even having a tap number! And lots of dancing in that wonderful Fosse style, so people will be able to see a different side of Broadway.'' Due to the huge success of the past two shows, there will be five performances of `Broadway in Bermuda' including a special Saturday matinee for children.
The programme will include highlights from such smash hits as `Evita', `Funny Girl', `Anything goes', `West Side Story', `Rent', `Chicago', `Ragtime', and Sondheim's `Passion'.
Broadway artists taking part also include Liz Larsen, who received a Tony nomination for `The Most Happy Fella'; Daniel Jenkins, nominated for a Tony for `Big River'; Sal Viviano, who starred in `Falsettos'; Nikky Renee (`Once on this Island'), James Stovall, who appeared in `Life', and Two Island Productions co-founder Beth Dunnington who, switching effortlessly from opera to musicals, has scored a personal success in Mozart's `The Magic Flute'.
Once again, they will be joined by a line-up of strong Bermuda talent that includes Beverly Crick (Anna in `The King and I'), Daren Herbert (`Once on this Island'), Leyoni Junos, who performs at the Pembroke Princess Hotel, Paul Matthews (`The Boy Friend'), Steve Parkinson (`Me And My Girl'), Wayne Holt (`A Little Night Music') and young Rebecca Faulkenberry, who also appeared in `A Little Night Music' and took the title role in `Alice in Wonderland'.
Mrs. Peele is especially pleased that Willy Falk, Tony nominee for `Miss Saigon' will also be taking part. "He is a huge star on Broadway so we are very fortunate to have him. I'm thrilled, too, that Rebecca, who worked in our children's workshop this summer, it taking part. She is good!'' Two Island Productions, conceived in 1995 by Iva Peele, Beth Dunnington and the show's director Sheryl Kaller, was founded to encourage theatrical development between the two islands of Manhattan and Bermuda.
This year's show is produced by Mark Subias whose New York credits include `Stanley', and `Moscow Stations' (with Tom Courtenay). `Broadway in Bermuda' will take place at City Hall on Wednesday September 17 through Saturday September 20 at 8 p.m. with a special children's matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets at $40 ($20 at the matinee for children accompanied by an adult) are available at Opus One on Reid Street or telephone 295-8073. The opening gala performance includes a cocktail reception preceding and immediately following the show with the cast. Tickets for that performance will be $100 and may be reserved by calling 236-3228.
