Bus needed for rest home residents

A story in yesterday's newspaper about the St. George's Rest Home incorrectly indentified Cindy Swan as Cindy Young.

Local do-gooders are appealing for donations so they can purchase a bus for the residents of an East End rest home.

Reading and Bus Organisers for the St. George's Parish Rest Home, Cindy Young and Judith Stewart, are asking the public to "give anything they can'' so that the patients there will have a readily available method of transportation for use in emergencies and for regular outings.

Ms Young explained how she had first become aware of the residents' need during the approach of Hurricane Gert, last September.

"The matron at the home called and asked if she could borrow a golf-cart to transport her residents should the need to evacuate arise,'' she said.

"We thought that this was totally unacceptable in a society such as ours.

We're talking about our mothers, fathers, aunts and uncles and their safety!'' Ms Young explained that their goal was to raise a total of $85,000 -- inclusive of 33 percent importation duty -- with which to purchase a bus with all the comforts and amenities, including air-conditioning, a lift and a wheelchair section.

She said they had already received a donation of $5,000 from Shell Bermuda and another generous amount from the Department of Civil Aviation.

However, she asked for more help "to make this dream a reality'' for the residents of St. George's Parish Rest Home.

"We will all grow old one day! Some of us are better prepared than others, but there are some of us that may have to one day rely on living out our days in one of the Island's rest homes,'' she said.

"We all deserve the pleasure in our senior years of being afforded occasional outings, visits to boat races, parades and other special events, especially their favourite, Cup Match.'' "No donation is too small,'' Ms Young added. "We're incredibly grateful for anything anyone can give us.'' Ms Young can be contacted at 297-2422 and Ms Stewart at 292-0374.

`Shellfless' act: Shell Bermuda and the Department of Civil Aviation recently donated money to the St. George's Rest Home so that they could purchase a bus for the transportation of residents.
