Causeway may get wind monitor

A machine to monitor wind speeds on The Causeway is one of the items being considered as Government vows improvements to its hurricane response.

A Government source told The Royal Gazette the device, linked to the Bermuda Weather Centre, would act as an early warning system as winds reach 50 mph, forcing the closure of the lifeline to St. George's.

Information would be relayed on the emergency radio station and via normal TV and radio stations giving East Enders an hour's notice to get home.

Emergency medical facilities in the Old Town might also be beefed up after criticism that it could easily get cut off from the hospital in a crisis.

The options came out of a Emergency Measures Organisation meeting yesterday to learn lessons from Hurricane Florence.

Government will also be considering adding to its emergency shelter stock in key locations after only CedarBridge was open for evacuated families this time around.

There will also be a greater PR campaign to urge people to stay off the roads in the aftermath of a hurricane and let emergency services and road-clearers do their jobs.
