Marshall takes over Butterfield role
Butterfield Bank has appointed Tonya Marshall as the new senior vice-president, general counsel and secretary to the board of directors.
Ms. Marshall replaces Peter Rodger, who retired from the bank last week after 31 years of service.
Robert Mulderig, chairman of Butterfield Bank thanked Mr. Rodger for his many years of service to the board and the bank.
"As a member of the Butterfield Board for many years, I have had the good fortune to work closely with Peter," he said.
"On behalf of the directors, I would like to extend a sincere 'thank you' to Peter for his dedication and professionalism over the years.
"During Peter's tenure, Butterfield has grown considerably from a primarily local bank into the modern, international financial services company we know today.
"Peter's perspective and the wise counsel he has provided to the bank's management team over three decades certainly contributed to that success. I wish Peter all the best for a healthy and happy retirement.
"I would also like to take this opportunity to formally welcome Tonya to the Bank. We are pleased to have her as a member of our team."
Ms. Marshall has practised law for 10 years, the last eight of which have been in Bermuda, where her practice included all aspects of corporate and commercial law, with a focus on public company and insurance matters.
She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dalhousie University, Canada and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Buckingham in England.
Ms. Marshall also attended the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice to qualify as a Solicitor in England and Wales. She is a member of the Bermuda Bar Association and the International Bar Association, and is both a Notary Public and a Commissioner for Oaths.
She joined the bank in October from law firm Conyers Dill & Pearman.
Mr. Rodger, who retires at age 62 to pursue personal interests, reflected upon his time at Butterfield Bank and the changes he has seen in Bermuda's banking industry.
"Being with one company for over 30 years has been a great experience," he said.
"I have seen a lot of beneficial changes in that time; not just in the bank's international growth, but also in the development of Bermuda's various lines of international business.
"I am pleased to have played a part in many of those developments, and I know I am leaving the bank in good legal hands with Tonya Marshall."
