Donawa races to new course record
Costa Rica, continued his outstanding season by setting a new course record in the Mutual Risk Management Five Flat Miles road race on Sunday.
In the Sandys event, which started at Somerset Police Recreation Club and headed out around Dockyard and back, Donawa romped to victory in 25 minutes, 23 seconds, more than a minute ahead of second-placed David Dunwoody in 26:32.
Brett Forgesson, the 1997 winner, finished third in 27:06.
Jamal Hart (27:29) and Kevin Tucker (28:01) completed the top five while Manuel Lopes, who also represented Bermuda in Costa Rica along with Donawa and Hart, was sixth in 28:11.
Vernon Tankard, seventh, was the first masters finisher, clocking 28:19 and finishing two places ahead of Harry Patchett (28:38) in the same category.
Alison Cameron notched victory among the women, placing 29th overall among the 129 finishers in 32:53. Second female was Georgia Belboda in 35:33 which put her 46th overall.
Sharon Lines was third among the women, two places and 16 seconds behind Belboda.
Juniors also competed over a much shorter course (1.6 miles) with Richard Walcott first in 9:14, Henry Talbot second in 9:40 and Coyatito Smith third in 9:47. Shar-dae Whitter was the top junior female, placing eighth overall in 10:13. Flora Duffy was 10th overall and first in her age group in 10:19.
There were some 82 junior finishers.
