Super sub Samuels denies Colts

Jahmel Samuels, who scored a hat-trick as a substitute earlier this season, threw the Coca Cola First Division title race wide open on Saturday evening when he denied leaders Devonshire Colts victory with an 89th minute equaliser at PHC Stadium.

The teenager completed a remarkable fightback by Boulevard who trailed 2-0 at the half and were seemingly on their way to another defeat.

The point Colts picked up extended their lead overnight but yesterday they lost top spot when Dandy Town won.

The goal that turned the game around came in the 58th minute from the penalty spot after Dwight Warren had been needlessly fouled by Jermel Belboda near the edge of the penalty area and with his back to goal. Dean Boyles duly scored from the spot.

It was a different game after that as Boulevard continued to charge forward.

They boosted their attack by bringing on Samuels for Donnie Charles just a minute after the goal and he was quickly involved. Colts goalkeeper Troy Hall extended an arm to deny Samuels an equaliser in the 73rd minute when he was caught going the wrong way as the youngster met a cross from the left by Boyles.

Neil Robinson, still feeling the effects of a knock from Keishon Smith which earned the Colts midfielder a booking, wasted a good chance when he blasted over the bar from inside the box.

However, Boulevard's persistence paid off a minute from the end when a long ball upfield saw Warren play a short pass to Samuels who drove his low shot inside Hall's left-hand post.

After controlling so much of the first half, Colts will no doubt be disappointed at allowing a victory to slip from their grasp. They were slow in getting started but took a deserved lead in the 27th minute when midfielder Vic Ball scored the first of his two goals.

Quincy Aberdeen's cross came in from the right, Mark Ray met it at the far post and hooked it back into the middle where Ellington Weldon miskicked in front of goal and Ball followed up to score from 10 yards.

Ball, returning to the Colts line-up after being dropped for the second Dudley Eve final against PHC, was the man of the moment again in the 33rd miute.

This time he followed up a poor clearance by the Boulevard defence to calmly place his shot past Mitchell Steede after initially hesitating on the left side of the box.

The son of the Colts coach was involved all around, collecting a booking in the 37th minute for bringing down Vernon Eve and then being substituted in the second half as Colts tried to halt Boulevard's fightback.

Referee: Esten Curtis Men of match: Dwight Warren (Boulevard), Mark Ray (Colts) Dandy Town 2 Dev. Cougars 0 Dandy Town made up for their early exit from the Dudley Eve Tournament by going top of the First Division standings with this home win over Devonshire Cougars yesterday.

Town dominated the first half and took a deserved lead midway through when Darron (Duke) Simons found the net from the penalty spot after a handball was blown against a Cougars defender.

Cougars got more into the game in the second half but Scott Morton settled the contest for Town 20 minutes into the half when he scored with a glancing header from an inswinging free kick on the right by substitute Chris Anderson.

To add to the Cougars' gloom, midfielder Wali Salaam was sent off soon after the second Town goal for kicking at Carlos Smith.

Town dominated again after that and held on for the win which puts them a point ahead of Devonshire Colts in first place.

Cougars, hoping to move into mid-table safety, stay in eighth place, four points ahead of St. David's as the bottom five places in the standings remained unchanged.
