Adult-child tournament down to final four

in Sunday's exciting play-off matches which left the pairings of Graham and Tim Counsell, Michael Surubb/Mel Caines, Sim and Alan Bergl and Douglas Olson/Kirby Smith remaining for next Sunday's finals.

The match of the round of 16 was fought out between the father-son pairing of Tim and Graham Counsell against uncle and nephew Roger Sherratt and Robert Maycock.

Graham and Robert took to the court first with Graham giving Robert an eight point advantage under the handicap system. In a tight game Graham ran out the winner 15-11, 14-15, 15-6 to give his team a deserved 2-1 lead.

Sherratt then quickly took a 2-0 lead against Tim Counsell and only needed one more game to secure victory for his team. Tim then fought back valiantly to clinch the final game 15-14, saving three match points along the way.

With the match tied at 3-3 it was up to the juniors, Graham and Robert, to play the deciding tie breaker. Graham again had to give Robert a start of 11 points after his final game victory of 15-6.

Graham played extremely well to pin back the deficit and secure his first match point at 14-12. Both boys were very competitive and Robert showed his spirit to climb back to 14-14 and have the entire match hinge on the final point.

The final rally was hotly contested with both players moving all over the court to recover the ball. Finally, Graham hit a very tight shot in the front backhand corner, which Robert could only just get his racquet to, but his return clipped the top of the tin to give the Counsells victory 15-14 in the tie breaker.

The most exciting match in the quarters featured two of Bermuda's national representatives, Michael Shrubb and Mel Caines, against the brother-sister combination of Sean and Jessica Harvey. Shrubb defeated Sean Harvey in a very tough tussle 2-1, after Sean fought back valiantly after losing the first game 15-10 to win the next 15-1. After losing his cool in the second game Michael regained his concentration to clinch the match 15-10 and give his team a 2-1 lead.

Thirteen-year-old Jessica then had the difficult task of having to defeat 25-year-old Caines to tie the match. While Caines had a deficit of 44 points over Jessica he was expected to use his superior power to overwhelm the teenager and take victory for his team.

To his credit, however, Caines rallied with Jessica, waiting for her to make a mistake. however, she was equal to the task and ran out victorious 15-14, 13-15, 15-13 in a match lasting over an hour. Her valiant effort had tied the team match at 3-3 and another tie-breaker was required for a result.

The tie-breaker brought the two juniors, Michael Shrubb and Sean Harvey, back on the court with Sean having the advantage of four points after the handicap adjustment. Sean couldn't emulate the collossal effort of his sister, with Michael dominating play and taking a 15-9 victory to lead his team into the semi-finals.
