Favourites Rangers clinch youth tournament
In a keen but ordinary encounter Glasgow Rangers won the inaugural International Youth Tournament last night at National Stadium, thanks to goals in each half by Billy Gibson and Peter McDonald.
It was a deserving victory for the Scottish team who beat their opponents 2-1 earlier in the week.
Rangers this time had the US visibly rattled with a spirited first-half display which saw the Scottish team demonstrate an enormous appetite for goals and pin down the US for the entire half.
Fortunate for the USA they had height in goalkeeper Mike Ewers who was called on a few times to make desperate saves.
Their dominance saw them come close after 11 minutes when Billy Gibson headed a corner just over and then six minutes later Ewers used his height to pull down a hard 16-yard drive by McDonald.
McDonald then forced Ewers to push his 17-yard blast over after 17 minutes and then added frustration came to Rangers when Andrew Harrow missed a sitter from close range.
During this dominance by Rangers the US team struggled to sort themselves out, offering nothing up front but pace from forwards Joe Bucholz and Adam Schultz that was handled by a well-drilled defence.
Shortly afterwards Rangers got the expected opening goal when Steven McAdam had his shot blocked by Ewers only to see the rebound fall to the feet of the grateful Gibson who hammered the ball home from a few yards.
The US ended the half on the attack with a rare chance that saw Bucholz chip a ball inches over the bar from 17 yards.
The trend of play changed dramatically at the start of the second half with the US clearly overcoming their period of shakiness and penetrating into goal-worthy areas for the first 20 minutes, but the Rangers defence refused to yield.
Rangers had to wait until the 70th minute to get a clear crack at goal and it came from McDonald whose overhead kick from 14 yards went just wide of the post.
Five minutes later though McDonald was spot on the mark to put the game out of reach with the second goal for Rangers.
A free kick by Kevin Robinson struck McDonald just outside the box and the talented player, with a move of sheer brilliance, masterfully turned and volleyed a fierce shot home that Ewers had no prayer of stopping.
