UBP calls for fresh approach on criminal justice

The criminal justice system was one of the subjects discussed by Patricia Gordon Pamplin, Charles Swan, John Barritt, Kim Swan and Trevor Moniz during a UBP press conference at its headquarters.

The United Bermuda Party has reiterated concerns that the public has no faith in the criminal justice system, and called for a fresh approach to address the issue.

At a press conference on Thursday, party leader Kim Swan praised grassroots community efforts to tackle crime.

And Shadow Attorney General Trevor Moniz called for more to be done by Government preferably as part of a bipartisan effort involving his party.

"We need to up the game all the way along the system. We need to increase the confidence of the people, every part of the system has problems," he claimed.

His party colleague John Barritt, Shadow Minister of Good Governance and Legislative affairs, called for a "full independent audit" of the criminal justice system.

He also backed ideas such as making prisoners earn early release by obtaining their GED, tackling drugs in prisons, rolling out proposed anti-gang legislation, and reviewing the effectiveness of the parole system.

Mr. Barritt has already tabled a private member's bill to amend the Court of Appeal Act so prosecutors can appeal controversial decisions by judges to throw out cases. He hopes it will be debated in the next parliamentary session.
