Mountain bikers back in action
The seventh season of mountain-biking racing gets underway this Sunday at Hog Bay Park, starting at 9 a.m.
Under new sponsorship and now known as Conrad?s Mountain Bike Race Series, the event will feature 12 points races which will be held at various parks around the Island with riders from ages seven to 60 participating.
In preparation for the 2004-05 season, mountain-biking clinics have been held over the the past two Saturdays at Admiralty House Park and at the Arboretum where riders were able to pick up valuable pointers from seasoned riders Garth Thompson, Neil de ste Croix and Tim Fox.
Anyone interested in biking is invited to Hog Bay Park this Sunday at 8.30 a.m. for trial rides.
In recent years, many riders have tried racing in the Novices? category before quickly progressing to the Open or Veteran divisions.
Racing in the Open category this year should be especially competitive. Last year?s winner of the point series, Thompson, will defend his title as will Dave Padega who won the national championships. They are expected to be pushed hard by New Zealander Geoff Wing, newcomer Chris Lynch and the much-improved Grant Goudge.
Among the veterans, last year?s points series and national championship winner Tim Palmer will again be hard pressed to retain his titles over Paulo Madeiros. Ricky Sousa Jr, winner of last year?s points series in the 13-14 age group, and Tim Fox will resume their intense rivalry in the 15-16 category.
Women and girls are also being encouraged to join the likes of Ashley Robinson and Kim McMullen.
