A total of 55 cyclists turned out for the annual Boxing Day marathon ride with seven of them completing the full 100-mile distance.
The event began at the Flagpole on Front Street with organiser and president of Bermuda Bicycle Association, Greg Hopkins, later expressing his delight at the turnout which he said "clearly bodes well for the popularity of cycling in Bermuda''.
The field represented a mixture of age, experience, youth and new faces as the riders set off at 8.00 a.m. to tackle the first of four 25-mile laps.
Included in the field was professional Elliot Hubbard, past top riders Clark Tear, Joey Richardson and former Olympian Earl Godfrey, together with promising youngsters Kris Hedges, Tyler Butterfield and Jonathan Herring as well as top females Shona Palmer and Melanie Claude who completed her first 100 miler.
The other six finishers were Hubbard, Hopkins, Jason Krupp, Jim Butterfield, Kris Hedges and Kevin Tucker.
The riders all stayed together for the first lap, ensuring that the youngest were able to experience cycling with some of the Island's top competitors.
The course took the cyclists from the Flagpole to Admiralty House, down North Shore to Fractious Street, to Wilkinson Avenue, onto Harrington Sound to Devil's Hole, along South Shore to the Paget stop lights, onto Middle Road to Burnt House Hill and back to Hamilton via Harbour Road.
TABLE TENNIS PP Prison Officers, spearheaded by Darron Trott and the improved play of Calvin Butterfield and Barry Rahman, are the surprise leaders at the half-way stage of the Bank of Butterfield League.
Officers have won all nine of their games so far for a maximum 18 points, three more than Old Colony Club who are the defending champions. Even if they beat Prison Officers, OCC will need help as Prison Officers' game difference is presently eight better.
BPSA I are the other team in with a chance of winning the title. They are presently third in the standings with 14 points, four ahead of The Centre.
Individually, Darron Trott and Nick Frost of Old Colony Club lead the standings with Trott holding an unbeaten 21-0 record, having dropped just one game, while Frost has an 18-0 record and has lost just two games.
TENNIS TEN John and George Wardman won the parent/child doubles tournament at Coral Beach, beating Andrew and Bruce Robinson 7-6 in the final.
