John's Road family-run grocery store in 1982. Born and raised in Bermuda, the
going to a boys' boarding school in Wales. Following his O 'Levels, Mr.
Adderley went to Polytech in Cambridge, England where he achieved a higher national diploma in business studies. Later he attended the College for the Distributive Trades, a business college established by firms in London, where he completed a business degree. During that time, Mr. Adderley worked for a supermarket chain in south-east England. "I would work for six months and study for six months,'' he said, "so at the end of three years, I had a degree as well as work experience.'' The college was specifically designed around the needs of retail trade, said Mr. Adderley, who later returned to the Island to work for Trimingham's. He was also employed at A1 Limited and the Supermart on Front Street before going to work for the fire station in 1979, where he was a dedicated firefighter. But in 1982, the owner of T.A.
Adderley's at that time, Mr. John Adderley, passed away. "When my father died, I was forced to make a decision,'' said Mr. Gareath Adderley. "So I decided to leave the fire station and take over the store.'' He added that his basic education was geared toward business and even when he was working elsewhere, he would help out at T.A. Adderley's on the weekends. "Taking the store on was very challenging,'' he said. "And I had a lot of decisions to make.'' Mr. Adderley recently decided to expand the store into a full service supermarket with the recent addition of a three-storey building. The changes can work well for us, he said, adding that he is pleased with the refurbishing results. Manager Mrs. Patricia Fisher described Mr. Adderley as a community-oriented person and a pleasure to work for. "He never asks something of his employees that he wouldn't do himself,'' she said. "Gareath still wants to maintain one-on-one relationships with his customers even though the store has grown into a big business. He runs it just like his Dad did,'' she noted. "He's a real people-oriented person -- that's why the business is the way it is. And you'd never even know Gareath owned the store -- he sweeps and scrubs the floors just like the rest of us.'' Mr. Adderley still maintains his status as a volunteer firefighter and assists the fire chief in St. George's with volunteer training. His career in fighting fires qualified him in CPR and first aid, which helped him save a baby's life outside the store last year. When Mr. Adderley is not working at the store, he likes to "go boating'' and simply "relax on the water'' with his family. He is married to Maxine and has two sons, six-year-old Gethin, and three-year-old Steffan. Asked if he would like his sons to one day take over the business, he said: "I will allow them to do whatever they want. But I hope they keep the business in the family -- whether they work here or not.'' PHOTO FULL SERVICE SUPERMARKET -- Owner Mr. Gareath Adderley in the new improved grocery store.
