A three-strong team of Bermudians is set to visit a Commonwealth conference in Mauritius.

Up for discussion will be trade, ethical standards, human rights, the role of women in politics, the environment and hi-tech communications.

Community Affairs Minister Sen. Yvette Swan, Senate Opposition Leader Milton Scott and Shadow Home Affairs Minister Alex Scott will all attend the seven-day 43rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference, to be held this week.

Sen. Swan will be presenting a paper on Commonwealth cooperation to protect the environment, including the seas.

Earlier, the three lawmakers will be joined by Clerk to the Legislature Muriel Roach for the 17th Small Countries Conference, held in the two days before the main conference kicks off.

Among the subjects on the table will be the UN Small States Forum, multi-party politics, health-care financing and the cost of sustainable growth.

MAN SUFFERS BEATING CTS Man suffers beating A heated argument ended in a Pembroke man being rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with facial injuries.

Police spokesperson P.c. Gary Venning said the victim, aged 24, was punched in the stomach.

As he doubled over from the blow, the culprit kicked him in the face. The incident occurred on Friday afernoon on Friswell's Hill in Pembroke.

And a second man was taken to the hospital after being assaulted on Montpelier Road, Devonshire early on Saturday.

P.c. Venning said an injured 25-year-old man flagged down a Police car near the Arboretum at 1 a.m.

The man sustained head injuries as well as cuts and abrasions to his hands after allegedly being beaten by another man.

FERRY PILOT CHARGED CTS Ferry pilot charged A pilot for the ferry Sea Venture yesterday appeared in Magistrates' Court for allegedly taking a course which could have endangered the life and limb of a person.

James A. Spence, 47, of Cove Valley, in St. George's, denied the charge which stemmed from an incident on June 24.

Spence, who was not represented, will return to court on January 12 for trial.

He was released on his own recognisance.

WOMAN ADMITS THEFTS CTS Woman admits thefts A woman who pleaded guilty yesterday in Magistrates' Court to stealing said she was finding it hard to make ends meet.

Court was told Cathy-Ann Carter, 33, of Harlem Heights Road, Hamilton Parish, was arrested after her employer told Police she suspected someone had been stealing from the busines for 18 months.

Prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor said Bermuda Glass Blowing Ltd. owner Gayle Cook had set up a camera in her Front Street store located in the Emporium Mall to catch the culprit.

Carter was taken to St. George's Police Station where she admitted the offences and was charged with stealing a total of $117 from her employer on June 26 and 27.

Duty counsel Peter Farge told Senior Magistrate Will Francis yesterday that Carter needed the money for household expenses and was finding it "hard to make ends meet''.

Mr. Francis ordered a social inquiry report to be conducted by October 20.

AMPLIFIER, PHONE TAKEN CTS Amplifier, phone taken Thieves stole more than $2,000 worth of equipment from a parked car.

Police yesterday said the items were stolen from a purple Subaru sedan -- which was parked overnight at the junction of Gorham and Woodbourne Roads in Pembroke.

Among the items stolen were an amplifier and a cellular phone hidden under the driver's seat. The car was also damaged.
