Top Bermuda youth squash player Nicholas Kyme has placed sixth out of a prominent field of players in the under-16 division of the Scottish Junior
Kyme, who last summer led Bermuda's team in the World Junior Squash Championships in Cairo, Egypt, and the Rosebowl tournament in Jamaica, reached the quarter-finals before losing in straight games to the tournament top seed.
In a competitive international field, Kyme stormed to a second round victory over Indian's leading player, Arjun Krishnau, winning 9-1, 9-6, 9-1.
But in the quarter-finals he drew number one seed Mohd Azlan Iskandau of Malaysia who hadn't dropped a single point at that stage of the competition.
Kyme got off to a great start, jumping into a 3-0 lead, but he was unable to maintain that pace and eventually went down 9-3, 9-0, 9-7.
He then rebounded from that loss to beat Ireland's top seed, Richard MacBride, 9-5, 6-9, 9-4, 6-9, 9-5. Following that win he was beaten by India's Bikram Oberoi in another five-game thriller, 4-9, 9-6, 4-9, 9-5, 9-4.
HARNESS RACING RAH A holiday crowd of over 300 were treated to an exciting afternoon of harness racing at Vesey Street on Wednesday.
The highlight of the afternoon saw Michael DeCosta's Grand Shady turn in a record setting performance in the half mile, covering the distance in 1:06 flat.
The Noah's Ark feature race of the day was won by Eddie Roque's Tuxedo's Bow Tie, who won both of his heats.
Other double winners were Little Bear with Fernando Rego, Francis DeSilva's Speedway Jr., Sharon Hunt driving Custom Eyes'd and Roque with Shamrock's Formal Attire.
Roque was the day's top driver with four wins.
The closest race of the day was the 23rd which saw Custom Eyes'd and Arthur Hurst's Vieda's Laser Beam cross the finish line in an identical time of 1:11.
But the photo showed Custom Eyes'd slightly in front.
All drivers who participated in Wednesday's programme wore black arm bands out of respect for the late David Mello, who died at the track on Boxing Day.
There is a break this weekend with the regular racing programme set to resume on Sunday, January 12, with a new starting time of 12.30 p.m.
SWIMMING SW Another ocean swim series, similar to that held in local waters last summer, is being organised for the winter -- despite the sea's plunging temperatures.
The first race, over a quarter mile, will take place at the Southampton Princess Dolphin Quest on January 12, starting at 1.00 p.m.
Other races in the series are planned for February 16 (Horseshoe Bay, half a mile): March 16 (Evans Bay Wharf in Southampton, three quarters of a mile); and April 20 (Harrington Sound Dock, one mile).
Prizes will be awarded in five different age groups -- under 16, 16-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50 and over -- with swimmers having to compete in at least two of the four races.
Swimmers will be allowed to wear wetsuits.
