Woman injured in industrial accident

A female forklift driver was rushed to hospital yesterday morning after the machinery she was operating lost control and crashed into a wall.

The 43-year-old Sandys woman had to be freed by colleagues after her leg got trapped between the vehicle and the wall at the Tynes Bay Waste Treatment Facility in Palmetto Road, Devonshire.

She was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment to a leg injury and discharged later in the day.

Sgt. Alec Swan, from Bermuda Fire Department, told that the equipment the woman was operating was a miniature tractor known as a Bobcat. ?The employees at Tynes Bay used a crane truck to take the weight off the Bobcat,? he said. ?She was released prior to the arrival of the fire department.?She suffered a minor injury to her left leg. The employees at Tynes Bay had released her. The fire department assisted with medical care.?

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Works and Engineering, which runs Tynes Bay, confirmed the accident and said the cause was being investigated.

Permanent secretary Derrick Binns said he could not comment until the investigation was complete, which he expected it to be by early next week.
