St. Kitts too strong
Netball Championships in Montserrat, this time going down 77-32 to St. Kitts in the second match.
The Bermuda girls held their own in the first quarter as St. Kitts built an 11-6 lead.
The St. Kitticans started to pull away in the second quarter, opening up a 33-18 lead at half-time, which was increased further to 54-27 after three quarters.
"We had a problem with height,'' admitted delegate Debbie Saltus last night.
"Their goalshooter is six-foot-three and our goalkeeper Patty Tucker is five-foot-six and Nicole DeGraff, our goal defence, about five-foot-10.'' Chenita Zuill replaced Sherrita Steede at wing defence in the fourth quarter and despite seeing the game slip away from them, the local women refused to give up.
"Despite the score Bermuda played really well,'' Saltus said. "We were definitely disadvantaged with the height of our players. I can't say the teams have outplayed us, we're just as fit and as skilled as they are, but they have the height and they can jump.'' Debbie DeShields led the Bermuda scoring with 24 goals from 39 attempts while Rose Richardson scored the other eight from 22 attempts.
Tonight, they play the fast-moving Trinidad team in the last match and Saltus expects another tough encounter from what she has seen of them in the past.
Sharon Castanada, the centre who stands at 6'3'', is back in the Trinidad team, having recently been on a basketball scholarship while in defence they have 5'10'' Hazel Taylor. The captain is goal attack Bridgett Adams.
