Sims struggles Down Under
Bermuda’s Nationwide Tour player Michael Sims fired two four-over-par rounds of 76 over the final two days of the $600,000 Jacob’s Creek Open in Australia to finish in a disappointing tie for 60th place.
Having held down fifth spot following a sparkling opening round of 67, the Belmont Hills pro only just made the cut when he shot a second round of 75 on Friday. And it didn’t get any better over the weekend as he failed to make up any ground during the closing rounds at the Kooyonga Golf Club in Adelaide.
Sims finished the 72-hole tournament — his second Nationwide event of the year — on 294 in a tie with Australian Peter O’Malley, just three places from the bottom of the pile.
He began yesterday’s final round tied for 59th at two-over for the tournament, having carded four-over 76 on Saturday.
But any hopes of climbing up the leaderboard were dashed as he proceeded to bogey six holes and also suffered a double bogey on the fourth.
Sims birdied the first but then bogeyed the third hole and doubled the 355-yard, par-four fourth.
He also bogeyed the ninth, 13th, 14th and 15th holes on the way to another round of 76.
American Scott Sterling edged local favourite David Lutterus by a single shot to win the event.
It’s now expected that Sims, who earned a year’s exemption on the Nationwide Tour last November after qualifying at the PGA Tour Q School in La Quinta, California, will make the short hop over to New Zealand this week to compete at the $600,000 HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship to be held at the Clearwater Country Club in Christchurch.
The Bermudian’s best finish so far this year was on the Tour De Las Americas earlier this month in Bogota, Colombia where he finished third at the Colombia Masters and pocketed $11,375.
His efforts over the weekend earned him $1,242.
