Wanklyn exhibition opens Wednesday

'Translucent Reflections' is the title of artist Alicia Wanklyn's solo exhibition, which opens at the Elliot Gallery in Devonshire on Wednesday. A reception is planned for Monday, December 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and it will close on December 2.

Small is beautiful at Dockyard gallery

The Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard launches its members' juried show, 'Small Works 3', on Sunday, November 30 from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m., and all are welcome. The evening will have a Christmas theme, and guests will receive a glass of champagne on arrival. There will also be a bar and canapés. Admission is free, but donations for the bar will be gratefully received.

Each artist can enter up to six pieces. Established artists including Chris Marson, Sheilagh Head, Jonah Jones, Diana Amos and Kok Wan Lee are among the exhibitors, and new artists will also be participating.

Oils, watercolours, acrylics, ceramics and mixed-media pieces will be included in the mix, and the work will be priced so that there is something for everyone. Keeping the sizes small — approximately 12 inches x 12 inches — and the prices low means it will be an opportunity for everyone to buy original art not only for themselves, but as unique Christmas gifts.

Fund-raiser for The Unit

Earmark December 21 for a concert of music from the '60s, '70s and '80s presented by Caisey Family Productions. The event takes place at the Berkeley Institute auditorium at 4 p.m. Proceeds will help to finance The Unit's trip to Cuba next year, when they will represent Bermuda in the Cuba Jazz Festival. Tickets ($40) will be available at Kit 'n' Caboodle and the IStore later this week.

Bermudian talent goes international

Professional photographer Ian Macdonald-Smith is one of only 52 people out of 500 applicants whose work has been selected for exhibition and sale by The Artist Project in Chicago, Illinois (see www.theartistproject.com), which runs from December 4-7. Mr. Macdonald-Smith will be showing photographs of water reflections.

Thereafter it will travel to the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois from January-April 2010, and the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, New York from May to July, 2010. It will then open in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC in August, 2010. A book will also be published to accompany the exhibition.
