Senate, house praise Clinton for victory
Clinton on his landslide US election victory.
He told the House of Assembly he had written to congratulate the President-elect.
Sir John said Mr. Clinton's pledge to restore economic health to America boded well for Bermuda.
Opposition leader Mr. Frederick Wade , saying the PLP had also written to Mr.
Clinton, joined in Sir John's congratulation, as did National Liberal leader Mr. Gilbert Darrell .
Mr. Wade also praised defeated President George Bush, claiming he would be remembered for helping to introduce democracy in the Soviet Union and parts of Europe.
Mr. Wade also offered condolences to the family of the late Mr. Walter Robinson, a former PLP leader and Puisne Judge.
He described him as a distinguished member of the House, who served Bermuda well.
Other MPs, including some from the Government benches, paid their own tributes to Mr. Robinson.
Another late member of the bar also came in for praise -- Puisne Judge the Hon. Mr. Justice Seaton.
Mr. Stanley Morton (PLP) said Mr. Justice Seaton achieved high standards and noted he had taken his talents abroad, working in Africa and as a United Nations representative.
Tourism Minister the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge urged that a letter of condolence be sent to the widow of the American visitor killed in a road accident this week in Smith's Parish.
Former Minister for Youth and Sport the Hon. Harry Soares congratulated the organisers of the World Rugby Classic.
Mr. Soares also praised the national soccer team, saying it had unified the Country.
Shadow Health and Social Services Minister Mr. Nelson Bascome expressed thanks to Mr. Don Chmiel, the Mayor of Chanhassen in Minnesota.
While there on a soccer tour, he said Mr. Chmiel had offered him the key to the city.
Shadow Education Minister Miss Jennifer Smith said Mr. Ross Smith should be congratulated on becoming the new alderman of St. George's.
Miss Smith also congratulated British MP Miss Dianne Abbott, the first black woman to become a member of the House of Commons.
Environment Minister the Hon. Mrs. Ann Cartwright DeCouto expressed sympathy for the family of the late Mr. Huw Morris, Government Lifeguard Superintendent and triathlete.
She said Mr. Morris had been an ex-officio member of the Water Safety Council, and had played his part with enthusiasm and vigour.
The Hon. Sidney Stallard (UBP) said thanks should go to the United States Naval Air Station, and the US Government.
He said the USNAS American-Bermudian Friendship & Festival Airshow had been a great success.
Mr. Ottiwell Simmons (PLP) congratulated the Friswell's Hill United Organisation.
Mr. Simmons also expressed condolences to the family of late boat pilot Mr.
Hadley Millett, of St. David's, as did Mrs. Grace Bell (UBP).
Community Affairs Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons said condolences should be sent to the family of the late Ms Edna Fox Hunt, a cerebral palsy sufferer and fundraiser.
Deputy Opposition leader Mr. Walter Roberts expressed sympathy for the families of two late taxi drivers Mr. Elliott (Nick) Swan and Mr. Erskine Brangman.
Mr. Walter Lister (PLP) remembered barber Mr. Kenneth Simmons.
Mr. Reginald Burrows (PLP) expressed condolences for the family of the late Mr. Alfred Zuill and Mr. Elliott White.
